Dental Inlays and Onlays

Illustration of dental inlay and onlayOccasionally, a filling may not be the best way to repair a decayed or damaged tooth. In fact, they can reduce the strength of your tooth — up to a surprising 50%! Inlays and onlays are an alternative that is bonded onto the tooth with resin, increasing its strength by up to 75%.

What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Lasting for 10-30 years, inlays or onlays can be made from porcelain, composite resin or gold. The material is bonded to the damaged part of the tooth. An inlay is used inside the cusps of teeth, while an onlay extends to cover the cusps of a tooth. Though gold used to be the standard choice, porcelain has overtaken it as the most popular option due to its natural look and strength.

The Procedure for Inlays and Onlays

Only two appointments are needed to get an inlay or onlay. At your first visit, all decay or damage is removed and the tooth is prepared. An impression is taken that will be sent to our on-site laboratory to be fabricated. You’ll receive a temporary sealant on the tooth. When you return, we’ll remove that sealant, then fit the inlay or onlay. After checking for a perfect fit, it’s bonded in place with resin and polished for a gleaming look.
